1. New Medscape Slideshow: Zika in Babies in US Territories
Medscape recently announced a new online slide show, Zika in Babies in US Territories (November 2018) that highlights key data from the CDC's August 2018 Vital Signs Report and recommendations for screening infants possibly infected by Zika. The resource addresses the healthcare providers' important role in early identification of health and developmental issues related to congenital Zika virus infection.
2. ITCA Annual Survey: State Challenges and Responses
In October 2018, ITCA published its 13th annual report containing survey responses from 47 of the 56 states and jurisdictions regarding issues for implementing Part C of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). ITCA uses this information to track emerging issues regarding eligibility, finance, and continued participation in the Early Intervention Program for Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities (Part C of IDEA).
3. AAP Policy Opposes Corporal Punishment: Recent Evidence
This news report from the AAP (November 2018) announces its updated policy statement highlighting recent evidence of the negative implications of using corporal punishment to discipline children. Studies reveal "a strong association between spanking children and subsequent adverse outcomes" for a child's development. For example, "corporal punishment is associated with increased aggression in preschool and school-aged children". It was also found that parents are more likely to follow a pediatrician's advice about disciplining than other professionals, therefore, pediatric providers are advised to reinforce positive disciplining strategies via behavioral counseling and parent education materials.
4. 2018 Scan of State Policies
NIEER's recent state-by-state scan of policies (July 2018) evaluates 59 state-funded preschool programs and determines how well each implemented a list of 'essential elements' necessary for high-quality programs. The analysis gives deep insight into each state's implementation strategies, areas of strength, support infrastructure, and areas for improvement.
