1. Integration of Data from Early Childhood Programs and Services
A new joint report, Integration of Data from Early Childhood Programs and Services (November 2016), has been released to help states refine their capacity to use existing data from early childhood programs to improve services for young children and families. The report discusses key considerations for integrating and linking early childhood data and highlights progress in eight states that are actively developing and using early childhood integrated data systems (ECIDS). It also discusses technical assistance, includes resources available to states for ECIDS development, and reflects on lessons learned from additional states when approaching this work.
2. Hispanic Children's Participation in Early Care and Education
A new series of briefs looks at early care and education (ECE) program use among Latino families across the United States, finding that gaps in ECE participation between low-income Hispanic children and their peers may be closing, especially in the preschool years. Additionally, some of the hardest-to-reach groups, such as immigrant families, are accessing ECE programs. The briefs in the series include:
- Hispanic Children's Participation in Early Care and Education: Type of Care by Household Nativity Status, Race/Ethnicity, and Child Age (November 2016)
- Hispanic Children's Participation in Early Care and Education: Amount and Timing of Hours by Household Nativity Status, Race/Ethnicity, and Child Age (November 2016)
- Hispanic Children's Participation in Early Care and Education: Parents' Perceptions of Care Arrangements, and Relatives' Availability to Provide Care (November 2016)
3. Understanding Executive Function and Self-Regulation in Early Childhood
A new report, Untangling the Terms and Skills Related to Executive Function and Self-Regulation in Early Childhood, maps out the similarities and differences among various executive function and other regulation-related skills for children ages three to six and discusses the implications for research, policy, and practice.
4. Using Video, Self-Reflection, and Coaching to Enhance Early Intervention Services
A new video, Using Video, Self-Reflection, and Coaching to Enhance Early Intervention Services, has been added to the FIT FOCUS Video Library. The video illustrates how an early intervention program in New Mexico uses video, self-reflection, coaching of practitioners, and coaching of coaches to support their practitioners to use a more routines-based and coaching approach to better support families.
The FIT FOCUS Video Library is a project of New Mexico's Family Infant Toddler (FIT) Program and the Early Childhood Learning Network of the University of New Mexico's Center for Development and Disability. New videos will be added in the coming months.
5. Zika Virus Resources from the AAP
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has added a new Zika Virus page to its website, which includes: AAP Zika Response Activities, Latest News, Guidance Specific to Children, Psychosocial Support, Resources for Health Care Providers and Health Departments, State Level Actions, General Information on Zika, and more.
6. Strengthening the Kindergarten-Third Grade Continuum
A new report, Strengthening the Kindergarten-Third Grade Continuum (November 2016), provides an overview of policy options state policymakers can use to expand access to quality kindergarten through third grade learning opportunities to help put children on successful, lifelong trajectories and ensure that the benefits of preschool do not diminish overtime. It focuses on areas such as: full-day kindergarten (FDK), social-emotional learning (SEL), kindergarten entry assessments (KEAs), English language learner reclassification procedures (ELL), and student-teacher ratios (Ratios).
