- Alphabetic principle - written words are composed of letters that are related to phonemic segments of the words of oral language
- Phonemes - the small units that combine to form syllables and words in oral language
- Phonological awareness - knowing that oral language has a structure that is separate from meaning
- Phonemic Awareness - a special kind of phonological awareness involving the smallest units of oral language, phonemes
