A Couple of Critical Distinctions
Explicit/Direct Instruction
- taught overtly; e.g. “this letter is “t” - its sound is /t/, what sound?
- DON’T wait until kids “trip over it” - if it is important, teach it
directly - and provide plenty of practice and coaching so kids get it!
- “I do it - we do it - you do it” core of explicit teaching
- easy to hard, sensible sequence building on what kids know & need to
learn next (reading is developmental - age/grade independent)
