The Need for Reform
Special Education far too often is:
- Not teaching kids to read well! RESULTS
have been mixed at best; e.g. .4 - .6 yrs reading
gain per year in special ed = Gaps widen!
- “Balkanized” - too often separate from Gen Ed.
- Myths & misconceptions about “LD”,
Dyslexia abound
- Current knowledge base, in terms of reading,
often not accessible to special education teachers
- Subject to fads/fashions/cure-alls & kookism
