1. Digest of Education Statistics 2016
The NCES recently published (February 2018) its annual report, Digest of Education Statistics (2016), a compilation of statistical information that covers the broad field of American education from prekindergarten through graduate school. Data tables on the following pages provide statistics for children aged 3 to 5 to help stakeholders make comparisons across the years regarding preschool enrollment, services provided to children with disabilities under the IDEA Part B, and children engaged in home literacy activities: 85-91, 93, 116-117, 119, 130 and 144. Visit the full report: https://nces.ed.gov/pubs2017/2017094.pdf
2. Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) Policies Database Book of Tables
In December 2017, OPRE published this report that analyzes the CCDF policies established in October 2016 and uses data from the CCDF Policies Database to address the following research questions:
- What are the eligibility requirements for families and children?
- What must families do to initially receive assistance and to continue receiving assistance?
- How much do families have to pay out of pocket for the child care they receive?
- What are the requirements for child care providers, and how much are they reimbursed for care?
- How have the policies changed over the last year?
- How have selected policies changed over the last five years?
Note: The CCDF Policies Database is the primary source for finding detailed information on the policies for state/territory child care subsidy programs under the Child Care and Development Fund.
3. Using Data to Help Children in Critical Populations (Video)
When the United Way of Central Minnesota noticed that essential services such as preschool programming and nutrition assistance were not reaching growing Latino and Somali communities, they sought data for guidance. A new video (February 2018) illustrates how Minnesota uses data collection and integration to assure that early child care and education is accessible to critical populations in need of these services. Read the case study to learn more.
4. American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Special Supplement on Zika
The AAP has published a special supplement on Zika (February 2018) including articles that offer best practices for addressing the needs of children affected by the congenital syndrome, what to expect as affected infants develop, and extensive care coordination with health care professionals to provide the necessary supports and services for families.
5. How States Fund Pre-K: A Primer for Policymakers
A new policy brief from the Education Commission of the States (February 2018) reviews current state examples to help policymakers understand the various revenue streams available for funding quality pre-K programs. From funding formulas to social impact bonds, this brief provides several useful funding strategies and a list of linked references to access further information.
