1. The State of Preschool 2014 - New Yearbook Released
The State of Preschool 2014: State Preschool Yearbook (May 2015) was released on May 11, 2015. This latest edition of the yearbook presents data on state-funded prekindergarten during the 2013-2014 school year and documents more than a decade of change since 2001-2002. It finds that state funding for pre-K increased for the second year in a row, although programs have not yet fully recovered from the funding cuts in 2011-2012. State pre-K quality standards improved notably in 2013-2014 and enrollment growth resumed modestly. Twenty-nine percent of America's 4-year-olds were enrolled in a state-funded preschool program.
2. Child Outcomes Summary Process - Free Online Module
This new free online module draws from the work of the Early Childhood Outcomes Center and is designed to help early intervention and preschool special education staff understand the Child Outcomes Summary (COS) process. It provides key information on the process and practices that contribute to consistent and meaningful COS decision-making. The first three sessions are available for use now and are meant to provide a basic understanding of the COS process. They include:
- Session 1: So What's This All About?
- Session 2: Overview of the COS Process
- Session 3: Essential Knowledge for Completing the COS Process
Register for the module here. It is self-paced and you may access it as often as desired.
3. Early Childhood Program Participation, From the National Household Education Surveys Program of 2012
Early Childhood Program Participation, From the National Household Education Surveys Program of 2012: First Look (May 2015) presents data on the early care and education arrangements and selected family activities of children in the United States from birth through the age of 5 who were not yet enrolled in kindergarten in the spring of 2012. The report also presents data on parents' satisfaction with various aspects of these care arrangements and on their participation in various learning activities with their children.

5. Immigrant and Refugee Workers in the Early Childhood Field: Taking a Closer Look
The number and percentage of young children of immigrants has grown substantially in the U.S. in recent years and there is an increasing need for a diverse, well-qualified early childhood workforce to provide culturally and linguistically sensitive early childhood services. A recent report, Immigrant and Refugee Workers in the Early Childhood Field: Taking a Closer Look (April 2015), finds that immigrants now account for nearly one-fifth of the overall early childhood workforce; however they are over-represented in lower-skilled and lower-paying sectors of the profession. The report discusses policy implications and opportunities to support the advancement of immigrant early childhood workers as part of an overall effort to improve the quality of the early childhood workforce.
6. Rising to the Challenge: Building Effective Systems for Young Children and Families
The BUILD Initiative, in collaboration with many of the country's early childhood leaders, has produced an E-Book, Rising to the Challenge: Building Effective Systems for Young Children and Families (May 2015), which shares learning from the initial implementation efforts of states to build effective early childhood systems. On May 12, 2015, the following chapters were released:
- State Systems Building Through Governance, by Harriet Dichter
- Local Systems Building Through Coalitions, by Karen Ponder
Additional chapters will be released in the coming months.
