The Institute for Education Sciences (IES) has released the FY 2009 funding announcement for its Special Education Research program (84.324A). The Institute invites applications for research projects that will contribute to its special education research programs in a number of different areas, including Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education. 4. The Progress of Education Reform: Early Care and Education

The Education Commission of the States (ECS) recently published The Progress of Education Reform: Early Care and Education, by Mimi Howard. The author reviews three studies that examine how a coordinated set of policies and practices linking early learning with the early elementary grades might support school readiness and help ensure later academic success. 5. Diversity and School Readiness Resources Available on the Build Web Site

In December 2007, the Build Initiative hosted a meeting on Diversity and School Readiness. The meeting was funded by the Heinz Endowments and the Annie E. Casey Foundation with support and participation from the National Black Child Development Institute and the National Council of La Raza. Background reading materials are now available online and include resources on the following topics: (1) framing issues and marketing strategies for equity and diversity in early childhood; (2) building cultural competence in child development practices and early learning standards; (3) building a diverse and culturally competent early childhood workforce; and (4) sharing power and expertise.
